What is Marriage and Family Therapy

Marriage and Family Therapy is a mental health profession that focuses on systemic thought in training practitioners in a variety of theories in order to customize help for individual, couple, and family concerns.

Who are Marriage and Family Therapists?

    • Marriage and Family Therapists treat a wide range of clinical concerns including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, substance abuse, relationship concerns, child-parent problems, and child/adolescent issues.
    • Marriage and Family Therapists believe that family, couple, and even individual problems are best treated in the context of the system.  MFTs take a “both/and” approach to working with problems, focusing on helping the individual person while at the same time changing the way the system works. This makes for effective and long lasting change.
    • Marriage and Family Therapists are able to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders.
    • Marriage and Family Therapists can become licensed mental health practitioners in all 50 states.
