    Child Life Internship Procedures

    1. After a student has been accepted into the Child Life Program (60-90 hours, minimum of 12 HD hours, 2.5 GPA, and application), the student meets with child life advisor. Meeting with child life advisor includes a discussion of:
    • Career goals
    • Internship goals
    • Possible internship sites

    2. Child life internships are 12 credit hours and all classes must be completed before the internship semester. Internships are completed during the last semester of the student′s undergraduate program.  Because the internship is very time consuming, it is recommended that students only take the 12 hour internship course during their internship.

    3. Students obtain information about potential internship sites through online search, the Association of Child Life Professionals’ Program Directory, and or conversations with others students and advisors.

    4. Student pursues contacts with possible internship sites, receives and assembles application packet for hospitals.  Currently, students apply to around 30 different hospitals.

    5. Applications to hospital programs are due the semester prior to the internship on the following dates:
    • September 5 for Spring semester
    • January 5 for Summer semester
    • March 15 for Fall semester

    6. Internships are competitive and require an interview(s) by phone or in person.

    7. Hospitals often require 100 practicum and/or volunteer hours prior to applying to their child life program.

    8. After acceptance into a child life internship program, the student attends the mandatory meeting at the end of the semester before internship to review requirements.
